Sara quit her job to start 2 businesses so she could work from home and stay home with her son. She helps her clients build their business and teaches other mums how to do the same. She also wants to inspire her son to create something wonderful in life that makes him happy without worrying about what others may think. Here’s how she did it:

Sara - Mum of the Week

Tell us about your business or blog

My business is Virtual Biz Partner. I have 2 sides to my business, on one I help moms building their online empire through strategy, business systems and getting a strong team in place! This is so needed in order to have a strong foundation so that you can reach the next level. The other side is that I train moms how to work from home as a Virtual Assistant. Then at times I connect the two sides by helping the mom empire builders to find a VA, it’s really great 🙂

Why did you start it?

This is a LONG answer, but in short, I hated my job! But I worked it from home every day except one day a week so my then 2-year-old son was home with me all but that one day. I kept feeling like there was more out there though! Rather than becoming a probation and parole officer like I planned (went to college for it), I learned about Virtual Assistants by seeing it on Facebook one day back in 2011. My son and family was the real reason – being away from them just wasn’t an option! I started my business on the side and it grew so much that by January 2013 I quit my full-time job to do my business full-time. And that first year I even made $10,000 more than I did at my job, for me that was validation I made the right choice 🙂

What steps have you taken to get traction?

Well, first I did a lot of research by googling things. Google can be great when trying to find info and resources. Next, I went with my gut feeling! I got into information overwhelm and decided to do what felt right for me. Then I took an online business program that educated me on the basics of online business. And after that, I worked with a mentor which really helped me to gain traction. After that, it’s been making strategic decisions on what will move my business forward.

What has been the main way of getting your name out there?

Growing my network, whether it’s clients, women I have virtual “coffee” chats with, connection on social media, this is the number one thing I suggest to help your business. Grow that network! It should be about helping and supporting each other, collaboration and not competition.

What challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them?

Haha, this list is long! Where to start. Not charging enough, not being focused enough, not doing enough list-building, and saying yes to working with any type of client. I’d so those were the main 4. This would be too long to explain how I overcame each one. But much of it had to do with growing as a person, learning more about business, and really valuing myself and not letting fear get in the way. At times, I felt like if I charged too much and was really specific with the clients I work with, that it would hurt my business. But the opposite is true, as I have charged more, been focused on my direction, and gotten clear on who I work with my business has grown even faster.

What has been your biggest success in your business?

Growing it enough that I could quit my full-time job! This was huge.

What is your family life like outside of business?

Early on, I was married with a son and 2 step-daughters. I was quite busy and loved family life. But there were dark things happening behind the scenes of a happy family. I am now happily divorced (a year in May 2017) and out of that toxic relationship. I have my 9-year-old son full-time and because of my business can support him and our needs. The flexibility of my business has allowed me space as my family life has changed as there were hard times and adjustments that went with the big changes.

What do you love most about being a business mum?

I’d say two things, one is the flexibility it gives me, for both, me and my son! The second is inspiring my son that you can create something wonderful in life that makes you happy even when others may not understand it!

What advice would you give someone getting started today?

Don’t let the fear and the unknown stop you! We never know what the future holds. Just take action each day to move forward, no matter how big or small. Keep doing that and you will bust through fear and create something amazing!
